About Us

Since 1989 we have been synonymous with beautiful well considered furniture and design led accessories

Drawing inspiration from both British and scandinavian design our furniture collections effortlessly blend style, innovation and superb craftsmanship.

We work with just a handful of chosen design partners who share our vision for exquisite furniture design and production. We also work with a selection of local designers and makers who produce capsule collections as well as bespoke textile commissions.

Our Milestones

1989 - Our founders Tony & Margaret Black stumble upon a beautiful 400-year-old rustic tithe barn in the historic market town of St Albans. A love at first sight moment led the couple to snap up the property right away!  After a lengthy transformation, they opened the doors in the December of 1989, marking the beginnings of a wonderful family business. Solid pine furniture is the offering from this passionate husband and wife duo.
1996 – As the demand for solid pine grows, our busy on-site workshop is busier than ever. Our customer base grows as do our collections.
2000 – The turn of the millennium saw us entering the digital age. Our very first website launches offering a much broader selection of products for our customers to buy online.
2005  - A new year comes with a new name and new logo. The new look Blacks of Sopwell is born. Keeping it firmly in the family, the next generation of the BLACK family enter a new era. With Tony keeping his hand in every now again (because you just can’t keep dad away)
2006 – A very big year for us saw the introduction of our new home accessories collections. Designed and curated to complement our furniture, our products were an instant hit and wonderful addition to the business.
2010 - A shift in design trends saw us move away from traditional pine. Evolving towards a new contemporary aesthetic.

2013- Saw the opening of a second showroom in the Hertfordshire town of Radlett - a new space allowed for the introduction of a much broader range of home accessories including entertaining, kitchenware, Bath&Body, gifts and home fragrance.
Our new space was also the perfect opportunity to collaborate with local artisans and provide a unique range of handmade gifts and accessories for our customers.
2015 – The arrival of our very first in-house collection of Home Fragrance launches. Available to purchase in seven beautiful scents, the collection remains a best-selling item across our stores weekly.
2019 - As technology evolves, so do we! We’ve grown quickly over the years, so naturally we needed a much larger corner of the web.  An exciting new website was launched in the summer of 2019 complete with a much more contemporary feel.
2021 – Saw our workshop moving off site to a larger facility. This larger space now accommodates our growing number of made to measure orders.
2022 – This year saw our newly launched creative studio and workshop space launch in the Spring. Situated to the rear of our beautiful 450-year-old Tithe Barn, our original on-site workshop was transformed into a fabulous new inviting space for all things creative.
2024 - With more retail room now available at our St Albans Barn showroom, the Furniture and the Interiors are merged to give a one stop shop, saying goodbye to the small Radlett showroom and presenting all our products under one roof at last. Both our handmade furniture and a range of contemporary brands can be seen including Ethnicraft, SITS sofas, plus accessories from LSA, St Eval, Ortigia Sicilia, Plum&Ashby and more...
