Sopwell

Blacks of Sopwell is located in a 450 year old tithe barn, next to Sopwell House Hotel in the Sopwell area of St.Albans in Hertfordshire.

The area of Sopwell is steeped in history and includes the ‘nunnery ruins’ which are actually the remains of St.Mary’s of Sopwell, a priory cell of St.Albans Abbey thereafter called Lee Hall. The reason for the ruins of today were most notably due to the disillusionment of the church by Henry VIII but this is only one aspect to the story of the ‘ruins’ and the area as a whole which is a fascinating read.
